Ashtanga Yoga

Many of the classes at Stonemonkey are based on Ashtanga Yoga. This method of Yoga was made popular through the teachings of Sri.K.Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. The method was passed down to him by his Guru Sri T.Krishnamacharya.

Ashtanga is a very dynamic practice, which challenges the body and the mind on all levels. Through repeated practice the student develops stamina, strength and flexibility but also a greater awareness and understanding of themselves and their potential.

The practice contains three core elements, Breath (Ujjayi pranayama), Bandha (internal locks) & Dristi (gaze point).

The student is required to, put to memory the correct sequence of poses and synchronise every movement with the breath, so that the practice becomes a moving meditation, with each pose being threaded on the breath.
